Recovering from a C-section is about more than healing a scar. A Caesarean section is major abdominal surgery, and while the skin may heal within weeks, deeper tissues, muscles and fascia can remain restricted for months or even years without appropriate rehabilitation.
At The Wellness Hub in Berkhamsted, our specialist postnatal physiotherapy, C-section rehabilitation and scar massage therapy treatments are designed to help you recover safely, restore core strength, improve mobility and regain confidence in your body.
How Can Physiotherapy Help After a C-Section?
Following a C-section, scar tissue and adhesions can affect the abdominal muscles, pelvic floor, posture and movement patterns. This may contribute to symptoms such as back pain, pelvic discomfort, weakness, tightness or difficulty returning to exercise.
Our physiotherapy-led rehabilitation programmes help to:
- Improve scar mobility and tissue healing
- Reduce pain, tightness and sensitivity
- Restore abdominal and core strength
- Support pelvic floor recovery
- Improve posture and movement patterns
- Reduce the appearance of a C-section shelf or overhang
- Improve confidence returning to exercise and daily activities
- Support long-term recovery and wellbeing
What Is Scar Massage Therapy?
Scar massage is a specialist treatment that helps improve the movement, flexibility and function of scar tissue following surgery.
Using gentle, evidence-based techniques, we work to:
- Reduce scar adhesions and restrictions
- Improve circulation and tissue health
- Reduce numbness and sensitivity
- Improve tissue elasticity and mobility
- Encourage lymphatic drainage and reduce swelling
- Restore comfort and confidence around the scar area
Scar massage is suitable for both recent and older scars, meaning it is never too late to seek treatment.

When Should You Start Scar Massage?
Scar massage can usually begin once the wound has fully healed, often from around 6–8 weeks after delivery. However, every recovery is different, and many women benefit from treatment months or even years after their C-section.
If you are unsure where to start, our postnatal physiotherapists can assess your recovery and create a personalised treatment plan.

Frequently Asked Questions
Below are a few common questions we regularly get asked. If you have any additional questions, please get in touch and our friendly team will be happy to help!
Yes. Even without a vaginal delivery, the pelvic floor muscles support the heavy weight of a baby for nine months and can weaken. Furthermore, a C-section is major abdominal surgery that affects core nerves and muscles, which a pelvic health physiotherapist helps you safely reconnect with.
Once your wound is fully closed and your doctor gives the green light (usually around 4–6 weeks), gentle scar massage is recommended. This prevents deep tissues from sticking together (adhesions), reduces numbness, and softens tight, pulled sensations.
No you don’t need a referral for this appointment and can book via the website.
